Sustainability is complicated but food is a language we all understand.
The plain truth is that the vast majority of consumers do not have a relationship with fish. A fish is a living entity whose value is as a contributing part of an ecosystem. When a fish meets a person, that fish becomes seafood. And it is with seafood that we have a relationship, the value of which is as a part of our sustenance. Speaking to people about the need to save the fish can commence at an impasse. We don’t have to go around saying save the fish, but rather of our need to save seafood, and thus our dinner.
Everyone is interested in dinner. Whether for nutrition, food access at all economic levels, the family values of communal meals, or just plain deliciousness, this is a part of daily reality for all of us. And dinner can be a celebration of our choices and the difference we can each make.
So when I say I’m just here for the food, I am simply trying to speak to people in terms they can relate to. To create a dialogue in which we all have a voice. So join us as we explore and discuss the difference we can all make, starting tonight.
